Web search in Hermes Agent just got fast — and free
For the first time, web search inside Hermes Agent really "just works." On September 24, 2026, Nous Research announced on X that Perplexity built Fast Search for agents, and that it is free for all Nous Portal tiers. In practice that means a logged-in, free Nous Portal account now gets managed Perplexity Fast Search built into the agent — no separate paid search key to buy, configure, or keep alive.
It has not always been that simple. Until now, searching the open-source Hermes Agent meant bringing your own web-search key, or holding a paid Tool Gateway credential. The new behavior removes that friction for Portal users: you sign in, and search works.
What shut the gate before
The technical change is a small but meaningful one. Managed Perplexity Fast Search was previously gated behind the generic paid Tool Gateway entitlement. That gate rejected registered Portal accounts without credits before a search request could even be sent. A fix merged in September 2026 (Hermes PR #122404) scopes Perplexity gateway resolution to a verified, logged-in, non-anonymous Portal account instead of the paid-tool gate.
The details matter. Missing or unverifiable accounts fail closed — this is not an open proxy. Direct-key routing is unchanged, and the managed Firecrawl fallback still works as before. Other managed vendors keep using the existing paid/free-pool entitlement. Only the Perplexity path changes, and it changes in the direction users actually wanted.
Why "Fast Search" is actually fast
Perplexity built Fast Search on a new Rust-based retrieval engine it calls Photon. The reported numbers are the part that stands out. Median latency sits around 160 ms (p50) with a p95 around 230 ms, at roughly a dollar per 1,000 requests. Perplexity also reports that across six agentic benchmarks it cut estimated agent task cost by about 68% at comparable answer quality versus its default preset, per coverage from HuggingNews, MarkTechPost (September 30, 2026), and AlphaSignal.
For a person running an agent day to day, those are the two numbers that matter: answers come back fast, and they cost almost nothing. Fast search stops being a premium extra and becomes the default behaviour of the loop.
The honest caveat
None of this is unconditional, and it is worth being precise. The free tier is tied to having a Nous Portal account — this is not a keyless free-for-all. Anonymous or unverified sessions still fail closed. And managed providers are not identical to bring-your-own-key setups: you are drawing on Nous's Perplexity integration and its config, not your own credential. If you specifically want direct-key routing or the Firecrawl fallback, those paths remain.
This shipped around the v0.21.x patch window — v0.21.5 was tagged the same day, September 24, 2026 — with full curated release notes for the window deferred to v0.22.0.
A pattern, not a one-off
Step back and the move fits a larger trajectory. Hermes Agent is an open-source (MIT) personal agent harness from Nous Research, running across terminal, desktop, and messaging platforms from Telegram to Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp. Over recent releases, Nous has been folding hosted services — images, browser, and now search — under one Portal subscription. The tool of a hobbyist running their own agents alongside the convenience of a managed account.

One key, one login, and search finally behaves the way everyone hoped it would when they first typed a query into an agent: it just runs.
